Elsie and Ben take a walk along Venice Beach. He tells her how his feelings about Newport Beach, where his mom lives, changed after his dad died. He used to like visiting, but Susan became obsessed with redecorating the house after she lost her husband. Elsie again asks him when he’ll tell Susan about their relationship. After Elsie arrives at Susan’s, Susan gives her a tour of the house and helps her get settled in the guest room. She doesn’t want her staying in Ben’s room because she thinks it’ll make it harder for Elsie. She then tells Elsie her plans for the evenings: they’ll get massages, order food, and watch movies together. She also reminds Elsie that while she’s staying with her, she can cry whenever she wants.

Susan is giving Elsie “her own little version of Widow Rehab” (262). Elsie cries when she needs to and listens to Susan’s advice.

One night, Susan invites her to accompany her to dinner with her friend, Rebecca. She admits that she wants to make Rebecca jealous of her relationship with Elsie. Elsie loves this plan and agrees to join.

Ben’s back continues to bother him, and he’s forced to take time off work. Elsie takes some time off to help him recover, too. Meanwhile, she keeps thinking about Ben’s impromptu marriage proposal, wondering if he was serious. She wants to start a life and family with him and waits for him to ask the question again. He finally broaches the topic when he’s feeling better one day. Elsie accepts, and they decide to get married that day. Thrilled, Elsie realizes she’ll finally have a family again.

Part 2, Chapter 37 Summary: “November”

Elsie and Ana rekindle their friendship during Ana’s visit. Ana and Susan get along, too. One day, the friends all talk about Ana and Kevin’s relationship. Elsie notices how Susan reacts when Ana says Kevin wants her to meet his family.

Before Ana leaves, she gives Elsie her mail. She finds a letter from George in the stack. In it, he writes about Lorraine’s illness and hospitalization. He regrets telling Elsie to get over Ben because he now realizes he might not survive without Lorraine. Elsie writes back an encouraging letter, assuring George that they both can live again.

Part 2, Chapter 39 Summary: “November”

Susan tells Elsie that she closed Ben’s bank account and wants Elsie to take the money. She then asks Elsie about the marriage certificate and gets frustrated when Elsie admits that she hasn’t called the county. On the way to Vegas, Ben and Elsie stop for fast food. In the parking lot, Ben starts to question what they’re doing. He tells Elsie he’s afraid of getting married without telling his mom. Part 2, Chapter 41 Summary: “November”

Elsie tells Susan it was her fault that Ben didn’t tell her about the wedding. She relays the story from Vegas, admitting that she was afraid Susan wouldn’t like her and that she’d convince Ben not to go through with the marriage. Upset, Susan dismisses herself from Elsie’s room.

Susan apologizes to Elsie in the morning and thanks her for telling her the truth. She admits that she is still grieving Ben’s death. Elsie suggests that they try talking to Ben to make Susan feel better.

Before leaving, Elsie packs up her things, realizing it’s time for her to go home. They take two cars and drive to Ben’s grave. At the cemetery, both women say what they want to say to Ben. Afterward, they say goodbye, make plans to have dinner the following weekend, and agree to contact each other if they need anything.

Part 2, Chapters 31-49 Analysis

In the final chapters of the novel, Elsie learns how to heal from her heartbreak, reconcile with her brief romance with Ben, and build new, healthy relationships. Ever since Ben’s death, Elsie has been afraid of moving on, convinced that engaging with her life and enjoying herself again is a betrayal of Ben’s memory. Furthermore, she fears that healing from her sorrow over losing Ben will erase Ben from her life forever. However, Elsie makes serious strides in The Journey from Heartbreak to Healing in the latter chapters of Part 2. She does so by accepting Susan’s help. Her time at Susan’s house grants her a retreat from her life in Los Angeles, and the time away from her home gives her the space to grieve without fear of disappointing others or disengaging from her typical daily life. During her time at Susan’s Newport Beach house, Elsie embraces healing and The Process of Finding and Building New Relationships. She takes active steps toward getting better by being gentle with herself and allowing Susan to guide her through this process. “However imperfect,” Elsie soon begins to realize that Susan’s “system is working” and that Susan is helping her become a “little bit more functional each day” (262, 264). In these ways, the novel illustrates the importance of graciousness, love, and friendship throughout the individual’s grieving and healing process. Without Susan, Elsie would remain entirely alone in her heartbreak. Susan is still grieving too, but the women discover how to share their sorrow. Together, they develop new coping mechanisms and therefore shepherd one another toward renewal.

Elsie makes a series of decisions throughout these chapters that are crucial steps in her healing journey. Throughout Part 1 and the first half of Part 2, Elsie assumes a passive mode of operating. Her grief dislocates her from reality and immobilizes her. However, her time at Susan’s house gradually leads her toward reconciliation with her loss and compels her to engage with her life once more. Each of her decisions is evidence of her progress in her healing journey: She tells Susan the truth, makes amends with Ana and accepts her friend’s experience with The Intensity of Brief and Sudden Romance, visits Ben’s grave, returns to Los Angeles, cashes Ben’s check, establishes the new young adult section at the library, and returns to her job. In the final chapter, her support for George in his own time of grief shows how far she has come—having received vital support from Susan, she can now take on this role for another loved one.

Elsie is better able to take these steps toward reconciliation and change once she reveals the truth about her and Ben’s wedding to Susan in Chapter 41. This vulnerable conversation marks a turning point in Elsie’s narrative and character arc. Although Elsie has let Susan into her life, she still hasn’t been honest with her about her and Ben’s relationship. She decides to confess her role in hiding the truth from Susan because she wants to maintain a connection with her, especially because her unexpected connection with Susan reignites her hope to finally have a supportive family. Therefore, she tells Susan everything so that they can maintain a healthy family connection in the future. In turn, Elsie is able to reconcile with her mistakes and her guilt, both of which are lingering and complicating her healing process. As a result, she feels more ready to leave Susan’s Newport Beach nest and return to her life in the city.

Once Elsie is back in Los Angeles, her progress becomes clear. In a scene that contrasts sharply with earlier depictions of her and Ben’s apartment, she reflects that the apartment now feels like her home, creating a spatial metaphor for her character arc. She engages in her other friendships again and reignites her passion for books and community service. In these ways, Elsie is taking control of her life once more and stepping into her true identity. She doesn't forget Ben by doing so; indeed, she decides to file the marriage certificate despite the clerical error because she wants a memento of her and Ben’s bond. This decision doesn’t negate Elsie’s concerted steps toward healing and her genuine desire to keep on living for Ben’s sake, and her decision to finally call and sort out the issue of the missing marriage certificate symbolizes her willingness to live in the present rather than cling to the past.
