Full Essay Assignments
Student Prompt: Write a structured and well-developed essay. Include a thesis statement, at least three main points supported by text details, and a conclusion.
1. In Chapter 6, Lauren’s dad says, “‘It’s better to teach people than to scare them, Lauren.’” Consider this quote in relation to Lauren’s growth as the leader of Earthseed. How does this advice shape her approach to sharing her belief system with others? Do you believe it is ultimately effective? Explain why or why not.
2. Although this novel was written in 1993, it is set between the years of 2024 and 2027. Compare and contrast Butler’s predicted dystopian future with the reality of the present day; do you see any similarities of Lauren’s reality with life today? If so, what are they? How would you address changing these issues?
3. In the novel, every chapter begins with verses from the Earthseed doctrine. What are the core tenets of this belief? How is the fluidity of God similar or different from her Baptist upbringing? Are these philosophies related to her Baptist background? Why or why not?
