Cyberpunk is a literary genre that emerged in the 1980s and is characterized by a focus on advanced technology and the internet, often in a dystopian setting. It is heavily influenced by science fiction and film noir and typically features gritty, urban settings with characters who are often marginalized or outcasts. Primary examples of cyberpunk in literature include William Gibson’s novel Neuromancer and Stephenson’s novel Snow Crash. Films such as The Matrix, Johnny Mnemonic, and Blade Runner have helped define the cyberpunk aesthetic and genre ideals.
One of the key themes in cyberpunk literature is the relationship between humans and technology. This relationship can be seen in the way characters interact with advanced technology, such as cybernetically enhanced bodies and virtual reality. This technology shapes their lives and experiences. Additionally, cyberpunk often explores the idea of a future where the lines between the physical and digital worlds are blurred, and the internet has become a dominant force in society. In many cyberpunk works, characters live separate lives in reality and cyberspace.
Cyberpunk has had a significant impact on popular culture, influencing a wide range of media including films, television, and video games. The aesthetic and themes of cyberpunk have been adopted by various subcultures such as cyberpunk fashion, music, and art. Additionally, speculative cyberpunk fiction has been seen as a precursor to the development of the internet, particularly with Gibson’s novel Neuromancer. Many of the concepts and ideas presented in cyberpunk literature have become reality in the digital age, including the adoption of Gibson’s term “cyberspace” as a synonym for the internet.
One of the most famous examples of cyberpunk literature is Stephenson’s 1992 novel Snow Crash. The novel is set in a future America where society has collapsed and the government has been replaced by corporations. The story follows Hiro Protagonist, a hacker and former delivery driver who gets caught up in a dangerous conspiracy involving a new drug called Snow Crash. Stephenson explores many of the key themes of cyberpunk literature, including the relationship between humans and technology, the blurring lines between the physical and digital worlds, and the internet’s role in society. The portrayal of the Metaverse in Snow Crash has had longstanding cultural ramifications. Films such as The Matrix have blended technological ideas about cyberspace from Gibson and Stephenson’s work, while the real-life Meta corporation is currently developing a 3D interactive online space that it calls the Metaverse. The irony of Metaverse is that it was built by the company that founded Facebook, a platform for personal data collection and ad sales, and this type of company is explicitly critiqued in Snow Crash. The development of Meta’s Metaverse is an ironic example of an idea being borrowed from an independent source and privatized, monetized, and controlled. Theft and the commodification of intellectual property is a central theme of cyberpunk. Unwittingly, the development of the modern Metaverse is the perfect example of how Snow Crash critiques capitalism.
Sumerian is an extinct language that was spoken in ancient Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) during the 3rd millennium BC. Sumerian is considered the oldest known written language and is the oldest known member of the linguistic family of Afro-Asiatic languages, though it is notably not related to contemporary languages. Sumerian is an agglutinative language, which means it uses a combination of different morphemes (units of meaning) to create words. Sumerian writing, known as cuneiform, used a system of wedge-shaped marks made by a reed stylus on clay tablets. The cuneiform script was used for a wide variety of texts, including religious texts, legal documents, and literary works. Sumerian literature includes myths, hymns, epics, and proverbs.
Enki is one of the most important gods in the Sumerian religion. He is often associated with water and is considered the god of wisdom, magic, and creation. According to Sumerian creation myths, Enki is responsible for the creation of humanity and is said to have helped the god of air, Enlil, create the first city, Eridu. Enki is often portrayed as a trickster figure, and many myths feature him outwitting other gods to gain power or knowledge. He is also associated with the arts and crafts; he is said to have invented the plow and the pickaxe.
Enki’s temple in the city of Eridu was one of the most important religious centers in ancient Sumer, and it was believed that the god himself lived there. The temple was a large complex that included a ziggurat (a type of stepped pyramid), a palace, and other buildings. The ziggurat was constructed as a link between the Earth and the heavens. Enki’s cult was widespread and popular throughout Sumer and later Akkad, and he continued to be worshipped in Assyria and Babylonia. Enki was often depicted holding a scepter and a bow, symbolizing his rule over the natural world and his power to bring order to the universe.
In Snow Crash, Enki and the Sumerian languages are an important part of the plot. Rife’s plan to take over the world involves a form of social control that posits Enki as a real historical figure and the Sumerian language as unique in its ability to convey and control information. In this version of history, Enki’s brain functioned differently. He had the ability to invent new ideas that broke the yoke of social control as implemented by the language. However, his legacy was corrupted by various world religions. Rife and his Pentecostal church are trying to reverse Enki’s legacy; Rife assembled an archeological team that found and researched the Enki before distributing Rife’s new technology among the refugees on the Raft. Hiro breaks Rife’s social control by reassembling the ideas originally used by Enki.
