Chapter 64 Summary

Thomas notices two mazes on the map, but can’t tell which one Chancellor Paige directed him to. Either way, he is going back to where it all began. He follows the map to a ladder that he climbs to find himself outside the WICKED headquarters. He moves toward some outlying buildings, hoping to find the attack party. Soon, he reaches a building and hears voices. Someone grabs him from behind. When he is able to see his attackers, he does not recognize one of them but the other is the Rat Man.

Chapter 65 Summary

Janson pulls a knife and says, “Let me tell you something, kid. I’ve never thought of myself as a violent man, but you and your friends sure have driven me to the brink. My patience is stretched to a minimum, but I’m going to show restraint. Unlike you, I think about more than myself. I’m working to save people, and I will finish this project” (274). Thomas gets an opportunity to attack and kicks the Rat Man and wrestles with the other man. He gets the knife and demands they let him go.

Remembering how Gally threw the knife so long ago, Thomas chucks it at Janson. It sticks into his neck. Before they can do anything to him, he runs. He gets to the courtyard where some members of the Right Arm wait. They direct him to where Vince is setting explosives.

Chapter 66 Summary

Thomas realizes that the Right Arm is not taking over WICKED, they are destroying WICKED. He feels they are no longer on the same page. He asks the Right Arm members what will happen to Minho and Brenda, who are inside working on a rescue. They explain Vince hopes they get out. They show him where to go see Vince.

Once inside, Thomas calls Gally over. He tells him that he knows where the Immunes are being held and insists they cannot blow up the place without getting the Immunes out. Gally tells him to hurry but is otherwise unbothered by the possibility of casualties. Thomas convinces Gally to come with him to rescue the Immunes. He agrees. They go into an office where Minho, Brenda, and the others are. He explains what they have to do and that they need to go to the Maze.

Chapters 64-66 Analysis

These chapters provide insight into both the Right Arm’s and Janson’s intentions. When the Rat Man confronts Thomas and accuses Thomas of thinking only of himself, there is truth in his words. Looking at the novel as a whole, Janson does not think much about himself. He is worried about the project, about the subjects involved. Despite his position as an antagonist, he is trying to save people. He believes in his project and he has a will to survive just as much as Thomas and the Gladers. However, these chapters demonstrate Thomas’s renewed interest in helping others—he is concerned about getting the immune out of the building safely.

On the other side, the Right Arm says they are concerned about others. (They want to save humanity, which only includes those who are not infected. This is again suggesting that once someone is infected, they are not human.) However, the Right Arm plans to destroy a building that houses hundreds of immune individuals. Thomas feels he is no longer on the same page as them. He did not want WICKED destroyed, he wanted them taken down, subdued.
