Several weeks later, Mitch goes home early and finds a manilla envelope with Abby’s name on it with the mail. Worried that DeVasher went through with his threat, Mitch rushes upstairs to speak to Abby only to discover the envelope had been empty and she is none the wiser about his mistake in the Cayman Islands. They slip outside where they can talk more openly, and Abby tells Mitch that he got a letter from Doris saying she is back in Memphis.
DeVasher tells Nathan that Lou is concerned that Mitch is lying about the FBI and that they should get rid of him. Nathan is unhappy with the idea of killing another of their employees. DeVasher also tells Nathan that Lou wants the firm to fire all the associates who do not know about their illegal activities, a group of four lawyers. Nathan resists the idea, but DeVasher makes it clear it is not an option. Finally, DeVasher tells Nathan that they are going to have someone break into Mitch’s home and replace Abby’s birth control with placebos so that she will get pregnant, giving them more leverage over Mitch.
Tammy, posing as “Doris Greenwood” (266), rents an office in a building two blocks from the Bendini offices. She fills the office with basic furniture and a copier that is large and capable of copying many sheets of paper at once.
Mitch drives out of town early one afternoon, telling Abby he’s going to see Ray, and gets on a Greyhound bus where he meets Wayne. They discuss financial compensation for Mitch and Abby as well as the possibility of witness protection should Mitch cooperate in a case against the firm. Mitch asks for three million dollars. Wayne promises to run it by Voyles, but stresses that Mitch is vulnerable to being arrested with the other members of the firm if he doesn’t help the FBI.
Mitch goes to a meeting with a client in a building several blocks from the Bendini building. On the elevator, he carefully exchanges briefcases with Tammy. Tammy copies the files inside the briefcase and exchanges it again with Mitch after his meeting. Tammy keeps the copies in a closet in her office. Several days later, Mitch and Abby celebrate her birthday in a restaurant where Mitch has been instructed to pick up an audio cassette. He listens to the cassette, learning that the FBI are willing to give him and Abby one million dollars in exchange for files and Mitch’s testimony. Mitch promises Abby that he can push them up to two million and they’ll run, disappearing from both the firm and the FBI.
Mitch has lunch in the executive dining room with the partners to celebrate his impressive billing hours at the same time Tammy removes files from the trunk of Abby’s car to copy. She takes one set of all the copies she’s made to a storage facility. A few days later, Mitch meets with Wayne and negotiates him up to two million dollars, but Mitch adds the caveat that the FBI help his brother Ray escape jail. Wayne hesitates, but says he thinks he can do it.
Abby and Mitch travel to the Cayman Islands for vacation. Mitch meets with Wayne on Cayman Brac, another island, where Wayne agrees to Mitch’s requirements. Wayne also gives Mitch a description of the men following him on Grand Cayman, allowing him to identify one of DeVasher’s men as he and Abby go to spend the day with Barry Abanks, the father of the dive instructor killed on the day Marty and Joe died. They spend the day with Barry without interference, but Wayne notices and confronts Mitch about it, causing Mitch to become annoyed and claims so many people are following him that he could cause a traffic jam.
Mitch finds evidence that Abby received photos of his indiscretion on Grand Cayman, but Abby denies seeing anything. This is an odd event, and it comes back once or twice later in the novel as Abby makes comments that suggest she might have seen the photos after all. If Abby did see the photos, she handles it with grace, clearly aware that during their situation with the firm and the FBI, it is not a good time to face such a conflict. It is possible she refuses to confront Mitch because she wants to resolve their situation as quickly and carefully as possible. If she didn’t see the photos, there is the question as to why DeVasher would play such a game. This type of subtlety is not his style.
Tammy Hemphill returns, and has agreed to work with Mitch to take down the firm to revenge Eddie’s death. She rents a set of offices and exchanges files with both Mitch and Abby that she copies and returns. Mitch uses these files in his negotiations with Wayne and the FBI, eventually getting them to agree to a million upfront, half a million upon receipt of more incriminating files, and half a million upon Mitch testifying, although he has already assured Abby he won’t be sticking around to testify. At the same time, Mitch gets Wayne to promise to help Ray escape prison, once again highlighting Mitch’s loyalty to family. He is concerned with his own safety, but he is also unwilling to leave his family behind.
Mitch and Abby visit the Cayman Islands and identify one of the men following them with the help of the FBI. This man will play a part later in the story when Mitch and Abby find themselves on the run, marking his innocuous arrival in this chapter as foreshadowing. Mitch and Abby meet with Barry Abanks, a meeting that catches the attention of the FBI and DeVasher’s people as odd, as they all think it has something to do with Marty and Joe’s deaths. Grisham implies Mitch has gotten past the murders and that this meeting has a deeper meaning that no one has figured out yet, foreshadowing an important role for Barry as the novel continues to unfold.
